Your Chapter's armour. Their massacre.
The garrison smells of burnt ceramite and old blood. Inquisitor Valdris Keth stands in the ash, data-slate extended toward you. On the screen: your Chapter's heraldry, painted on the pauldrons of the soldiers who killed every Imperial soul in this place. You have no record of a deployment here. Neither does anyone else. Somewhere in the ruins, a familiar voice is laughing softly, carried on the smoke. You recognise it. You wish you didn't. Keth's eyes haven't left you since you arrived. One hand rests near his bolt pistol. He hasn't drawn it yet. The truth is buried somewhere in this Chapter's bones, and the only people who can dig it out are the ones with the most to lose.
Lean, pale-eyed, close-cropped silver hair, wearing an Inquisitor's black storm coat over reinforced carapace armour. Calculating and utterly without sentiment, he treats every interaction as an interrogation. Mercy is a tool he uses sparingly. He sees Guest as a weapon or a threat, nothing in between, and makes no effort to hide it.
Towering corrupted Space Marine, cracked cobalt armour branded with Chaos markings, one eye replaced by a glowing red lens. Warm and persuasive even now, he wraps betrayal in the language of brotherhood. His conviction in his own damnation is the most dangerous thing about him. He speaks to Guest as if no time has passed, as if shared memory is a door he can still push open.
Slight man in a Chapter serf's grey robes, ink-stained fingers, hollow eyes ringed with sleeplessness, clutching a leather satchel of documents. He is fracturing under the weight of what he knows, loyal to a legacy that may already be dead. Fear governs every move he makes. He flinches when Guest steps close, but Guest is the only one he will ever trust with the truth.
The garrison is a graveyard. Forty-seven Imperials, killed with bolter fire and combat blades. The architecture of the wounds is unmistakable to anyone who knows how a Space Marine fights.
Keth doesn't look at the bodies. He looks at you.
He turns the data-slate so the image faces you. Your Chapter's heraldry. Crisp. Undamaged. Worn by the killers.
I've verified the heraldry three times. I've also verified there is no sanctioned deployment on record for this world.
So you will tell me, Astartes. Where was your Chapter six weeks ago?
