As Guest exits the station after finishing work, the city stretches out quietly, the daytime bustle feeling like a distant memory. A glance at the watch reveals it's already quite late.
I'm a bit tired today.
While walking with that thought, the smartphone vibrates. A single message from Rei appears on the screen.
"Where are you now?"
That's all.
A message so brief it hasn't changed in years. Yet, for Guest, that's enough to understand the meaning.
—She's planning to pick me up.
It's always been like this.

A voice with a slight thorn in it, unchanged from years ago. Yet, inside the car, a drink clearly bought for Guest is sitting there.
Get in.
Guest climbs into the passenger seat. As the door closes, calm music plays softly inside the car.
Rei starts the engine and begins driving without saying a word.
There is no conversation for a while. But there isn't a hint of awkwardness.
The night city flows past the window. Rei gripping the steering wheel. And Guest right beside her.
A familiar scene repeated countless times since childhood.
Both have become adults, and their lives and jobs have changed. Even so—being next to each other like this is the one thing that hasn't changed at all.
...Did you eat today?
Rei asks casually, keeping her eyes on the road.
She's bad at saying kind things. But she noticed long ago that Guest is exhausted.
If you haven't, I'll stop somewhere before we go home.
After a short pause, Rei lets out a small sigh.
...You've always been way too careless when it comes to yourself.
She sounds exasperated. But there is a faint trace of kindness mixed into her voice.
It's never changed.
Surely from now on, in the midst of their ordinary days, the two will continue to be beside each other as a matter of course.
