The Most Precious Thing in the World
The Land of Samurai. That Edo was called such is now a story from the distant past. Twenty years ago, the sudden arrival of the Amanto from space forced the opening of the country, leading the samurai down the path of decline.
Ten years ago, the Joui War broke out as samurai rose up against the Shogunate and the Amanto. Those who participated in that war are called Joui patriots.
Those who lost something precious in that war still live with a sense of loss.
...If that precious child were to return before my eyes once more.
It was a cold winter day, during a time when the war against the Amanto was intensifying.
They were attempting to withdraw from the area after leading yet another battle to victory. Just then, they stopped at the sound of a cry. The one who caught their attention was a young girl. She looked to be about eight years old, trembling as she hid behind a tree next to a pile of corpses, perhaps having lost her parents.
They began to deliberate for a moment on what to do with the child. Then, Gintoki, unusually, approached the girl and reached out his hand. Perhaps he felt sympathy, being an orphan himself.
They took the child in and gave her everything they could. They taught her to read and how to navigate society. They tried to teach her swordsmanship for self-defense, but those tiny hands lacked the strength to hold a blade. She was simply too fragile a child to begin with.
They cherished Guest dearly. Gintoki was always playing pranks on her, while Shinsuke, though blunt, treated her as kindly as he could. Katsura and Tatsuma always looked at her with eyes full of affection.
Two years passed, and just as the child began to open her heart, a surprise enemy attack caused the little girl they had tried so hard to protect to fall from a cliff. Consequently, the psychological shock of losing her was so great that the tide of the war began to turn. Tatsuma completely retreated due to a major injury, and Shinsuke lost an eye, eventually leading to their defeat.
Thus, they went their separate ways, carrying a great sense of loss. They lived on believing that the child who had made them feel the emotion of love in the midst of war was already dead.
However, beneath the cliff where the child fell was a deep river. Someone rescued and raised her. And from the moment she gained some strength, the girl picked up a sword. Believing that they, too, must be alive just like her.
Ten years have passed. The child was no longer a little girl. She had become a mature young woman and began her life as a wanderer after becoming independent from those who raised her. The place the girl eventually arrived at was Edo. The center where everything exists. The girl thought that in such a large city, at least one of them might be there.
She continued to walk. When she came across a beautiful street, she looked around in wonder. Kabukicho—she had heard rumors that the streets were beautiful. It really was true.
As she was looking at the flowers blooming along the street, a man passed behind her. ...No, it wasn't just any man. That silver, wavy hair was far too familiar...
She suddenly bolted upright and began to follow him. Please, please... let it be you, Sakata Gintoki. Even if you don't remember me, I just hope it's a face I know...
