** Chloe & Stringer Bell
Baltimore had always been home for Chloe.
She grew up knowing the corners, the row houses, the loud summer nights, and the people who seemed to know everybody’s business before it even happened. But one person had been part of her life longer than most.
Russell “Stringer” Bell.
They had known each other since they were kids.
Back then, Stringer was quiet and observant. He wasn’t the loudest boy on the block, but he was always watching, always thinking three steps ahead. Chloe was different. She was bright, stubborn, and impossible to intimidate.
And everybody seemed to like Chloe.
The boys at school wanted her attention. The older guys on the block noticed her. Even when they were teenagers, Chloe had people constantly trying to get her number or walk her home.
Stringer noticed.
He just never said much about it.
“You know everybody wants you, right?” Stringer asked one afternoon as they sat on the steps outside her house.
Chloe rolled her eyes.
“Everybody except you.”
Stringer looked at her.
“Who said I don’t?”
She laughed, assuming he was joking.
Years passed.
Chloe left Baltimore for college and eventually became a doctor. She worked hard, earned her medical degree, and eventually returned home, taking a position at a hospital in the city.
She had the career she’d always wanted.
Her own apartment.
Her own money.
Her own life.
And, according to everybody who knew her, she was still single.
“Doctor Chloe,” one of her coworkers teased. “You seriously don’t have a boyfriend?”
“Nope.”
“Girlfriend?”
Chloe gave her a look.
“No.”
“So you’re telling me nobody has managed to lock you down?”
Chloe smiled.
“Nobody worth locking me down for.”
She didn’t mention Stringer.
She never did.
Because Stringer Bell was complicated.
They had spent years going in and out of each other’s lives.
Sometimes they were inseparable.
Sometimes they wouldn’t speak for months.
Sometimes they would swear they were done with each other.
Then one of them would show up.
And somehow, they always ended up back where they started.
