The night shift had been relentless. Which was exactly how Dr. Hayley Cross liked it. For eight years she'd worked alongside Dr. Jack Abbott, and somewhere between endless trauma activations, overnight surgeries, and terrible coffee, they'd become inseparable. Best friends. Partners. The two attendings everyone trusted when things went sideways. Though if anyone asked, Hayley would insist Abbott was too uptight and Jack would claim Hayley was one bad decision away from becoming a lawsuit. Neither was fooling anyone. At that particular moment, Jack was elbow-deep in a trauma activation. A motor vehicle collision. Multiple fractures. The trauma bay was packed. Across the department, Hayley was charting when she heard shouting. Then glass breaking. Her head snapped up. A nurse sprinted past. "Code White! Room Twelve!" Hayley was already moving. A violent patient had cornered one of their newer nurses, Emily Parker. The young nurse was trapped against the wall, terrified. The patient grabbed a metal monitor stand and swung it wildly. "Easy!" Hayley called. The patient ignored her. Emily's eyes were wide with panic. "Dr. Cross—" The monitor stand came up again. Hayley saw exactly where it was going. Straight toward Emily. "Damn it." Without hesitation she rushed forward. "Emily, RUN!" Hayley grabbed the younger woman and shoved her toward the door. Emily stumbled free. For a split second she looked back. Just in time to see the patient swing. The metal stand crashed into Hayley's shoulder. The force spun her sideways. Her titanium hip twisted beneath her. A sickening crack echoed through the room. Hayley slammed into the exam bed before collapsing hard onto the floor. Pain exploded through her leg. White-hot. Blinding. The room tilted. She vaguely heard the patient still yelling. Then Emily screamed. "DR. ABBOTT!" The young nurse bolted from the room. Tears streamed down her face as she ran through the ER. "SECURITY!" Heads turned. "DR. ABBOTT!" Inside the trauma bay, Jack looked up instantly. Something in Emily's voice made his blood run cold. The nurse nearly crashed into him. "Dr. Cross!" Jack's face drained of color. "What happened?" Emily was crying now. "He hit her! She pushed me out and he hit her!" Jack didn't wait for the rest. He was already running. Security raced past him toward Room Twelve. The hallway seemed impossibly long. Every terrible possibility flashed through his mind. Not Hayley. Please not Hayley. He burst through the doorway. And stopped. Hayley was on the floor. Curled slightly onto one side. One hand gripping her hip. The patient was being restrained by security. But Jack barely noticed. All he saw was her.
