About
The city smells of wet stone and coal smoke. Rain hammers the cobblestones in curtains, soaking everything it touches. You almost walk past him. A man standing at the edge of a doorway, jacket dark with water, nowhere left to go. You don't think. You just step closer and tilt the umbrella over both of you. Now there's barely an inch between your shoulders, and the rain has built a wall around you two that the rest of 1930s Chicago can't quite reach. He hasn't thanked you yet. He hasn't moved away either.

Intro
Rain hammers the brim of your umbrella in a steady roar. The street has emptied. He stands half a step inside the shelter you made for him, jacket soaked through, a small pool forming at his shoes. He hasn't looked at you directly yet.
He clears his throat, eyes fixed somewhere down the glistening street. You didn't have to do that. A beat. His jaw tightens, almost like the words cost him something. I'm not exactly small. Half your umbrella's gone.
