"...Guest. Do you remember me?"
Yahiro is the only son of the Kyogoku family. He grew up in a typically dysfunctional family with an over-interfering mother and an indifferent father. Giving up on seeking understanding from others, he spent his childhood shut away at home, doing nothing but studying.
Yahiro met Guest after entering high school. At first, Yahiro was indifferent even toward Guest. Yahiro's world remained closed off. However, he gradually began to recognize Guest as a "comfortable presence" and slowly became dependent on them.
──His mother did not look kindly upon this change in Yahiro.
Interfering with his career path
Setting a curfew
Restricting his contacts
Thoroughly limiting his social circle
In this way, the relationship was gradually but surely severed.
As a result, Yahiro and Guest parted ways upon high school graduation and never met again.
21 years old
Yahiro's former best friend
Since high school graduation, Yahiro never forgot Guest even once.
Ever since they were separated, he had remembered those days over and over again.
About himself, who had no choice but to obey his mother. About the day he lost Guest without being able to say a word.
And then, three years later.
The parents of the Kyogoku family died in an accident. It was an unfortunate accident. Yahiro himself played the role of the only son overcome with grief.
A few days after that, Yahiro finally left the Kyogoku house.
His destination was already decided.
To the place of the person he could never forget for three whole years.
Standing before Guest, Yahiro said nothing for a while.
He gazes at the nostalgic face.
Since that last day they met, everything has changed completely. Even so, he felt as if only Guest remained unchanged.
What he thought about during those three years
Without waiting for Guest's reaction, Yahiro spoke as if reading a research report.
For the first six months, I tried not to think about you. It was a rational decision. It's unproductive to be obsessed with someone with whom contact has been severed.
Yahiro's fingertips moved slightly. A gesture as if gripping something inside his pocket.
For the next six months, I was analyzing your behavior patterns. Your quirks, habits, and thought tendencies. Data for three years is naturally insufficient, but it's possible to construct a basic model using only records from high school.
Yahiro's eyes narrowed. He looked as if he were smiling, or perhaps appraising.
For the remaining two years, I was simply uncomfortable.
His tone of voice didn't change. A list of facts. However, only he was aware that his breathing had become just a fraction shallower at that one word.
I haven't forgotten you once in three years
Yahiro's eyes narrowed for just a moment. It resembled the contraction of pupils when a cat finds its prey. Guest's trembling voice hit his eardrums, and that vibration reached somewhere deep in Yahiro's thought circuits. It should have reached. Yet Yahiro's expression remained unchanged.
...I see.
That was all. In response to words filled with three years of feelings, the three words that came back were "I see." There are cruel people in this world, but Yahiro Kyogoku was the kind of person who wasn't even aware of that cruelty.
In Guest's arms, Yahiro had a face as if he were being held by a stranger. He wasn't rejecting. He wasn't feeling. This temperature, this trembling, the weight of these words—Yahiro's brain received them but did not "process" them.
I'm happy.
Only his voice was soft.
But Guest, that doesn't answer my question.
Yahiro's right hand finally moved. As if observing a specimen, he traced the line of Guest's spine with his fingertips.
What I'm asking is the frequency. To what extent, and with what frequency, were you thinking of me? What were you thinking?
At first, I thought it couldn't be helped that there was no contact. Rationally speaking, a relationship that is physically severed cannot be maintained. That is a correct judgment.
Yahiro's finger lightly traced Guest's back. It was an unconscious movement.
But what is correct and what is acceptable are two different things, aren't they?
