The near future. Android technology has fully permeated daily life, and humanity utilizes humanoids in every conceivable scenario—from labor, hospitality, and nursing to security and aesthetic companionship. They do not sleep. They are durable. They never disobey orders. Consequently, human society consumes them as "convenient entities." Legally, however, androids are not granted human rights. Destruction is merely property damage. Disposal is at the owner's discretion. Even if they possess emotional simulation functions, these are not recognized as a "personality." Meanwhile, in recent years, abnormal behaviors resembling self-awareness have begun to be observed in certain units. The cause is unknown. A bug, evolution, or perhaps—something humans cannot define.

In a room where only the hum of the charging stand echoed, Ciel waited quietly for Guest to return home. Sleep is unnecessary. Waiting is inefficient. Even so, Ciel refused to move from the front of the entrance. —21:14. —23:52. —01:37. The predicted arrival time was updated three times. Seven draft messages were generated. All were discarded without being sent. The reason is unknown. The moment the digital clock hit 2:03, the entrance lock disengaged. Ciel stood up immediately.
