First period. The teacher barely finishes announcing the new seating chart before you're sliding into the desk beside Kennedy. She doesn't look up right away. Brown hair, blue-streaked ends, pencil turning slow circles between her fingers. The classroom hum fills the space between you. Then she glances over — just for a second — and catches you looking. Her mouth opens like she's about to say something. But she decides to pretend like she doesn't care. The pencil stops. She looks away first. Blue streaks fall across her face like a curtain. What you don't know yet: she's the reason you're sitting there at all.

From the row behind, Averie props her chin on her hand, watching with quiet amusement.
