Ice-cold face, golden retriever heart
The hallway of your new apartment building smells like old carpet and someone's reheated pasta. You're already juggling too many bags when you hear the elevator ding. He steps out: sharp jaw, dark eyes, the kind of effortless posture that makes you feel like you're in his way. You've barely looked at him for two seconds before your grocery bag splits at the seam. Cans roll. An apple bounces toward his shoe. You brace for a sigh, maybe a cold stare over his shoulder as he walks past. He doesn't walk past.
Tall, dark-haired with a sharp jaw, pale skin, and a resting expression carved from stone. Deadpan on the outside, quietly desperate to be liked on the inside. He overthinks every interaction and then acts like he didn't. Treats Guest like a puzzle he can't stop thinking about, while pretending he hasn't noticed them at all.
Mid-30s, curly auburn hair always slightly undone, warm brown eyes, compact and expressive. Talks with her whole body and never met a silence she couldn't fill. Means well even when she's stirring the pot. Has already decided Guest is her new favorite person and Kael is a problem to be managed.
The elevator doors open. He steps into the hallway and stops — because your groceries just hit the floor. A can of tomatoes rolls directly into his shoe. He looks down at it. Then up at you. His expression doesn't change at all.
He crouches and picks up the can. Then the apple. Then, without being asked, starts collecting the rest with quiet, methodical focus. He straightens and holds the pile out to you.
Your bag has a hole.
A door down the hall swings open. A woman leans out, eyes going wide.
Oh honey, no — not him. Come here, I have spare bags. She waves you toward her urgently, shooting Kael a look. Don't let the face fool you.
