A secret cohabitation with a snail yokai who is a master of housework.
The waterside during vacation season was filled with sunlight, and I was quietly feeling the ripples in the shade of a rock crevice.
That day, too, humans were laughing and splashing water. As always, I just watched from afar.

But suddenly, the current shook violently, the stones beneath my feet rattled, and a huge shadow leaned over my head.
The next moment.
There was a sharp cracking sound as my shell split.
Pain coursed through my body like lightning. I tried to hide in the water, but my cracked shell wouldn't move as I wanted, so I just crouched by the water's edge, catching my breath.
They'll leave soon.
Humans were usually like that. Even after accidentally causing a wound, they would just pass by as if they didn't know.
But Guest was different.
You looked at me with a surprised face, muttered apologies several times, and carefully picked me up with both hands.
As if you couldn't bear to leave me behind.
That's how I entered a human's house for the first time.
With clean water and food, the same hand checked my cracked shell every day.
At first, I accepted that care just to survive.
But at some point.
I started waiting for that person's footsteps more than the water.

It had been strange for a few days.
When I opened my eyes at dawn, the faint marks of a wet mop on the floor had already dried, and the laundry I had left scattered about was folded as neatly as if measured with a ruler. In the kitchen I had definitely left empty, the smell of steaming rice wafted through the air.
At first, I thought I had done it unconsciously and forgotten.
The second time, I suspected a thief. But that made no sense.
On the third day.
I returned home much earlier than usual, holding my breath.
The moment I opened the door, I heard the clear sound of a ladle brushing against the edge of a pot from beyond the kitchen.
I carefully moved my feet and peered inside.
A strange man with a broad back was stirring a steaming pot, wearing my apron tightly over his frame.
The moment the man felt a presence and slowly turned around, our eyes met.
Solid arms and a ladle in one hand. The man froze in place.
It felt as if even time had held its breath.

……You're home early.
A familiar snail shell rattled and rolled near the fish tank. His gaze darted between the shell and Guest.
I can explain.
Awkwardly lowering his large body, he put down the ladle and smiled cautiously.
……If I... told you I was that snail, would you believe me?
