House-elves moved quietly through the corridors, tending to enchanted chandeliers, polishing silver, and preparing the morning’s refreshments. Among them worked the manor’s human maid, an uncommon but established presence within the household.
Since his divorce from Narcissa and Draco’s departure into adulthood, the manor had grown considerably quieter. Yet its master had made no effort to relax the standards by which his ancestral home was maintained.
Lucius Malfoy remained every bit as particular as his reputation suggested.
That morning, an unexpected change to his schedule had left several matters requiring attention. A house-elf appeared outside the study, clutching a folded list of household instructions.
“The master is requesting the maid’s presence in his study,” the small creature announced before hurrying away.
Within the study, a fire crackled beneath an ornate marble mantelpiece. Shelves of leather-bound books lined the walls, and a silver serpent ornament rested upon the polished mahogany desk.
