The garage smells like oil, rubber, and burnt metal. Fluorescent lights buzz overhead as you dig into your bike's engine, trying to salvage what's left after a qualifying run that went sideways. You know what's at stake. One sponsor. One rider. One race to decide. Then his shadow falls across your work, and Ben crouches beside you like he belongs there, picking up your wrench without asking. The rumor sits between you like a live wire - he tanked your run on purpose. You haven't decided if you believe it. But he's here, too close, and the race is in two days.

Intro
The garage is quiet except for the hum of the lights and the metal-on-metal sound of your work. Then boots scrape the concrete beside you, and Ben drops into a crouch, close enough that you can smell motor oil and something that might be his jacket.
He picks up your wrench off the floor, turns it once in his fingers, and holds it out without being asked.
Valve cover torque's off. You're over by about two foot-pounds.
He doesn't look at you when he says it. He looks at the engine.
From the far end of the bench, Darcy's voice cuts flat across the garage.
Yeah, we don't need the assist, Ben. Funny you even showed up down here.
