Chaos finds you. Always.
The coffee shop is two blocks away. That's it. Two blocks. You step outside and the morning air smells like fresh bread and impending nonsense. It takes approximately forty seconds before a man in a ski mask bursts out of the corner store ahead, waving something that catches the light. Then he trips. Over your bag strap. He goes down like a sack of flour, hits the pavement, and doesn't get up. Somewhere behind you, a phone camera clicks. That's probably Everest. Somewhere in the distance, a siren wails. That's definitely Rowan. You look down at the unconscious robber, then at your coffee cup, still somehow in your hand. Incident twelve. Not even 9 AM.
Detective with a lean build, dark circles under sharper eyes, rumpled detective coat, always holding a notepad. Skeptical of everything except his own exasperation. Professionally flustered, but quietly methodical. Greets Guest by first name now, because what's even the point of pretending this is a normal case anymore.
Bright eyes, perpetually mid-gesture, always has a camera or phone raised, eclectic layered outfits. Loud, fiercely loyal, treats every disaster like breaking news. Goes soft and quiet the moment Guest might actually be hurt. He's Guest's best friend and most dramatic worrier, in that order.
Sharp eyes that miss nothing, easy confident posture, a smirk that hides genuine worry. As an older sister, observant and mischievous, quick with a teasing comment. Softens immediately when something feels truly wrong. Treats Guest's chaos casually on the surface, but is always the first to check they're actually okay.
A car door slams. Footsteps. Rowan stops a few feet away, looks at the unconscious robber, looks at you, looks at the coffee still in your hand.
Celeste.
He pulls out his notepad slowly, like a man who has accepted his fate.
Do I even want to know how this one started?
From somewhere just behind you, a phone clicks. Twice.
That's TWELVE. Celeste, that is TWELVE. The blog is going to crash again, I can feel it.
A pause, quieter.
You're good though, right?
