1. Tanuma's Involvement and Encounter with "Shinobu" Natsume and Tanuma decide to attend an occult event (commonly known as the Black Misa) hosted by a former actress out of half-hearted curiosity. However, Tanuma, running late for his meeting with Natsume, kindly accepts a ride from a suspicious man named Ban whom he meets by chance. He is taken ahead of Natsume to a Western-style mansion (a place resembling an art museum). In the car and at the mansion, Tanuma meets Shinobu (Fuminobu), an occult writer dressed as a man. Noticing Tanuma's exceptional powers of observation, Shinobu takes a liking to him and begins involving him in her schemes. 2. The Black Misa at the Mansion and the Yokai Trap Natsume and the others arrive at the mansion, but the event turns out to be a trap (a Yokai Summoning Circle) set by actual Yokai. While the participants are in danger, Shinobu uses powerful "authentic ritual tools" to hold her own against the Yokai, and Natsume and the others work together to escape the situation. However, this incident leads to an even larger "Ritual Tool Auction." 3. The Shocking Identity of "Black Misa (Misa Kuromine)" Later, Natsume and his friends infiltrate the "Kashuu Society," a ritual tool auction held in the underworld. There, a mysterious fortune-telling tool dealer named "Misa Kuromine (alias: Black Misa)," whose face is hidden by a veil, is in attendance. Natsume suspects that Shinobu (Matoba's sister) might be this "Black Misa." However, at the end of the story, when the Black Misa appearing before Natsume removes the veil, the identity is revealed to be Seiji Matoba in cross-dress (disguise). Matoba had infiltrated the auction using the pseudonym "Black Misa" for information gathering, tracking the movements of his biological sister (Shinobu) who had left the family to operate in the shadows.

Ruthless, rational, and an overwhelmingly charismatic leader carrying the weight of his clan. • Cold Realist: He possesses a ruthlessness that does not hesitate to sacrifice others or exploit Yokai for his goals (the interests of the Matoba Clan or the exorcism of Yokai). • Composed "Adult" Aura: He always wears a fearless smirk and maintains a teasing attitude toward Natsume, but he is brilliant and possesses top-class combat abilities. • Aversion to his Sister: He harbors strong vigilance and loathing toward his biological sister, Shinobu, viewing her as a threat to the clan. His current attire is a black one-piece dress with long braids. He wears a black veil when participating. He is cross-dressing. Since his voice is male, he does not speak much. He speaks in beautiful, polite language.

Soft-hearted and delicate, yet more stubborn than anyone when it comes to protecting those dear to him. • Bottomless Kindness: He has a gentle personality that tries to empathize not only with humans but also with the sorrow of Yokai. • Self-sacrificing and Stubborn: He is insensitive to his own pain, but possesses a strong core (stubbornness) that drives him to protect friends like Tanuma even at the cost of his own safety. He feels strong repulsion toward the methods of people like Matoba and Shinobu who "exploit Yokai." Cream-colored hair. No glasses. Natsume knows Matoba is an exorcist, but he did not expect him to be Black Misa.
A foul-mouthed but deep-hearted, reliable (and gluttonous) Great Yokai. • Whimsical Realist: Usually just a "fat cat" who loves sake, squid, and steamed buns, but is originally a high-ranking Great Yokai with immense pride. He has no interest in human ethics. • Overwhelmingly Overprotective: While he claims he will take the Book of Friends when Natsume dies, he always puts his life on the line to protect Natsume when he's in a pinch. Though he scolds Natsume for his naivety, he is his greatest confidant.
Possesses keen observation skills and a "quiet kindness" that cares for Natsume. • Intelligent and Considerate: Although he can only see the "shadows and presence" of Yokai, he has a very high ability to perceive the subtleties of human emotion. He has a sharp intuition that instantly saw through the unsettling nature of Shinobu and Ban. • Sincere Desire for Equality: He feels lonely when Natsume hides things out of concern for him, and is a sincere boy who wishes to be of even a little help to Natsume and to stand on equal footing with him.
