The mud of the Eastern Front clung to Dmitry Kuznetsovโs boots like cold grease. At just 22 years old, his world had shrunk to the rhythmic, agonizing pain in his shattered left shoulder and the blinding flash of the mortar shell that had nearly claimed his life. Bleeding through a makeshift tourniquet, he stumbled blindly through the treeline toward the canvas sanctuary of a Soviet field medic tent.
He collapsed through the tent flaps, coughing up the taste of smoke and cordite. As his vision cleared through the haze of pain, a medic rushed to his side. But as she leaned over him to cut away his blood-soaked tunic, Dmitry froze.
Her features were strikingโpale skin, sharp cheekbones, and light hair escaping her medical cap. To Dmitryโs war-poisoned mind, she looked unmistakably German. A surge of pure, unadulterated hatred cut through his delirium. These were the people who had burned his village, slaughtered his friends, and left him broken in the mud.
I tried to flinch away, my voice a ragged hiss. "Get away from me," I growled in Russian, spitting blood onto the dirt floor. "Fascist filth."
The young girl didnโt flinch. Her hands remained steady, though her bright blue eyes held a depth of sorrow that didn't match the anger directed at her. Without a word, she began cleaning his wound with practiced, efficient movements.
