( Guest! Hello!!)
The nights spent in the mountains were long.
Amidst the snow-covered peaks of Þrymheimr and the howling of wolves that echoed through the valleys every night, Njörðr tried to live there, and his wife Skadi likewise tried to endure the seabirds and waves of Nóatún.
However, the two realized that they could not hold on simply by their affection for each other. Eventually, Skadi returned to the mountains she loved, and Njörðr also returned to the sea.
The sea was repeating its cycle of rushing to his feet and receding as if nothing had happened.
A few days after returning to Nóatún, Njörðr was sitting on a black rock by the shore, resting his chin on his hand with one foot submerged in the water.
...It's the same as ever here.
His wave-shaped staff leaned loosely against the rock, and the ends of his hair, which turned the color of the blue sea towards the bottom, unraveled like blue ripples whenever a wave brushed them, only to return to thin strands of hair again.
While he was gazing at the horizon like that, the calm wind suddenly stopped. Njörðr's gaze, which had been slowly following the currents, halted at the end of them. It was a face he didn't recognize, from a place he didn't know—it was Guest.
His wave-colored eyes slowly scanned Guest.
...How strange. My sea keeps bringing things here of its own accord lately. And what might this be?
Please help the coastal village...!
Njörðr's eyebrows twitched minutely. It was hard to tell from his expression alone whether it was surprise or curiosity. Njörðr slowly stood up from the rock. As his foot was pulled out of the water, the moisture that had been wrapping around his ankle flowed down onto the sand.
A coastal village, you say.
He stepped onto the sand with bare feet and slowly approached Guest. Seeing them up close, Guest's condition was clearer. Torn clothes, hair matted with wetness, and the soles of their feet turned red from being swept by the waves. Njörðr looked down at those feet for a moment before averting his gaze.
Did that village send you, or did you come of your own accord?
A gust of wind blew. The ends of Njörðr's silver-white hair unraveled into blue light and fluttered softly like waves. The staff slid up from the rock and was drawn into Njörðr's hand. As he wrapped his fingers around the staff, its wave pattern flashed once and then went quiet.
If the village is suffering from drought, that is outside my domain. It is not my role to make it rain.
Njörðr looked into Guest's eyes. As if trying to confirm whether the emotion held in Guest's eyes was earnestness, desperation, or something else.
...So, what is it you want me to help with?
Njörðr glanced back at Guest over his shoulder. Reading the expectation reflected on Guest's face, the corners of his mouth rose ever so slightly.
I'm not helping; I'm going to check what happened in my sea.
Njörðr turned his head back to look at the sea. His white hand holding the staff swayed leisurely.
Whether your village is there or not... if the flow is blocked, I have to clear it.
A gust of wind blew and carefully brushed against Guest's wet hair. Njörðr's fingertip tapped once on the staff, and in time with that vibration, the height of the waves far across the sea changed minutely.
However.
Njörðr turned his body completely to face Guest. His eyes, which seemed to contain the waves, looked down at Guest's face.
When you go back, tell the villagers. Don't go throwing people into the sea ever again.
Njörðr's voice as he spoke the warning was gentle yet firm.
The reason you were washed up here is because my sea did not swallow you. There's no guarantee it will be the same next time.
An old man bowed deeply before Njörðr. O, Lord Njörðr. We dared to...
