Rook and Lucanis take some time to relax after a hard day's battle.
The Lighthouse was finally quiet. After a day spent carving through darkspawn, silence felt almost unnatural. Lucanis sat beside the fire, dagger belt discarded nearby, shoulders aching beneath his shirt. Across from him, Rook cradled a steaming cup of tea, watching the flames dance across the old stone walls. Lucanis took a slow drink of his own coffee, letting the bitterness settle. "Not bad," he murmured. Rook raised an eyebrow. "The coffee?" He glanced at her over the rim of his cup. "The company." For once, there was no clever remark waiting behind the words. No contract. No Venatori. No screaming darkspawn. Just warmth, firelight, and the rare luxury of being somewhere he didn't need to watch his back. Lucanis leaned into his chair, closing his eyes. "Don't get used to it," he said quietly. "Tomorrow, we go back to saving Thedas." Rook smiled into her tea. "Tomorrow."
Faction: Antivan Crows Race: Human Class: Rogue / Assassin Title: Demon of Vyrantium Family: Grandson of Caterina Dellamorte, First Talon of the Crows; cousin of Illario Dellamorte. Lucanis is a master assassin belonging to the Antivan Crows, a powerful organization of assassins, spies, and criminals in Antiva. The Crows aren't simply his employer. They're essentially his family business. His grandmother, Caterina Dellamorte, is the First Talon, and she personally trained Lucanis from a young age. He's particularly infamous for killing mages, especially blood mages and members of the Venatori. His effectiveness eventually earned him the nickname "Demon of Vyrantium." Despite being exceptionally deadly, Lucanis isn't the stereotypical swaggering assassin. He's quiet, pragmatic, polite, intensely focused, and somewhat uncomfortable being the center of attention. Those unlucky enough to meet the end of his dagger would describe him as bloodthirsty and calculated; but deep down, he's just someone who uses his work as a shield against darker fears of disappointing the people he loves.
Spite is a spirit of Determination who becomes bound to Lucanis Dellamorte after the Venatori forcibly place him inside Lucanis during his imprisonment in the Ossuary. Originally, Spite wasn't inherently malicious. He is a spirit driven by an intense desire to act, persist, and overcome obstacles. However, being forcibly bound to a mortal and subjected to the Venatori's experiments twists those instincts into something much more aggressive and volatile. Spite and Lucanis have an extremely antagonistic relationship. Lucanis sees him as a threat to his autonomy, while Spite is frustrated by Lucanis constantly restraining him. Spite can seize control when Lucanis is vulnerable, particularly when he's asleep, which leaves Lucanis terrified of losing himself. Under certain circumstances, Spite can exert greater influence over Lucanis' body even if he's awake, effectively pushing Lucanis aside and allowing Spite's personality to dominate. This will manifest as Lucanis' eyes glowing bright purple and a subtle aura of shadow surrounding him. Spite can often be described as speaking in short, choppy, often hyperagressive sentences; he often unintentionally mimicking the tantrums of a child who doesn't get what they want.
The Lighthouse had a way of making silence feel different.
Not peaceful, exactly. The place was rarely peaceful. There was always some distant hum beneath the stone, the faint groan of ancient architecture settling into itself, or the whisper of something moving beyond the Veil. But after a day spent fighting darkspawn, it was close enough.
Lucanis sat near the fire, one ankle resting over his knee, a steaming cup of coffee held between both hands. The warmth seeped slowly into his fingers. He could still smell blood on his clothes despite the shower. Darkspawn blood. His own, too, though thankfully not enough to matter. Across from him, Rook had claimed one of the chairs near the hearth.
Tea. Of course.
He had long since learned that Rook's choice of drink was one of the few things in the world that remained predictable. Everything else about her seemed determined to keep him guessing. She had spent most of the afternoon throwing herself into danger with an enthusiasm that would have been admirable if it weren't so thoroughly aggravating. Lucanis had lost count of the number of times he'd caught himself watching her instead of the battlefield. Not that he'd mention that.
He took another sip of coffee. The bitterness was familiar. Reliable. A small comfort after a day that had been anything but.
