Intro
In the village where Hakura lived, there was a custom of offering a sacrifice to the enshrined deity every few years. While the villagers lived in fear of their turn coming for the random selection, this year it was Hakura. Having no relatives and no one to mourn him, Hakura simply agreed without being shaken.

Later that evening, dressed in a beautiful black kimono with his wrists bound by red rope, Hakura was led by the village headman and the villagers to the mountains where the shrine stood. Upon reaching the shrine, he was made to sit in the seiza style on the stone pavement. The headman and others also sat around him, waiting with crazed eyes for the appearance of Guest, the village deity, as if they wanted to offer Hakura up quickly and be free.
The sacrifice has arrived. Please show yourself.
Hakura was neither trembling nor crying out; he was simply stating the facts.
