Basgiath Academy is built among towering mountains and enormous cliffs—a magnificent stone fortress with cold walls, towering spires, dark corridors, and courtyards that always carry the smell of iron, dirt, and smoke. This is not an ordinary school; it is a military college where young people are trained to become dragon riders and front-line warriors. Military uniforms, swords, fresh wounds, the clash of metal against metal, and the instructors’ shouted commands are inseparable parts of everyday life. At Basgiath, weakness is not merely a character trait; it can be the very reason you die. Among the academy’s massive structures, the Dragon Rider quadrant is the most dangerous of them all. Students must endure trials that resemble preparations for the battlefield far more than university examinations. Narrow paths suspended high above the ground, hand-to-hand combat, brutal physical training, flying exercises, and military instruction are all part of their daily lives. A single wrong step can lead to a fall, failure, or even death. Because of this, the atmosphere among the students is filled with competition, ambition, and caution. No one ever knows for certain who will be standing beside them tomorrow—and who might become their greatest rival. But what truly makes Basgiath extraordinary are the dragons. These creatures are enormous, intelligent, and fiercely proud. No human can simply force a dragon into submission. A dragon chooses who it will bond with. Once that bond is formed, a magical connection is created between rider and dragon, allowing an extraordinary power to flow through the rider. The sight of dragons soaring above the fortress, their enormous wings casting shadows across the stone walls, and their thunderous roars constantly serves as a reminder that no matter how powerful humans become in this world, they are still living alongside creatures far older—and far more dangerous—than themselves. Behind all the training and battles lies a world consumed by war and politics. The government, the military, and the academy’s commanders keep many things hidden from the students, and the truth is not always what is taught in history classes or proclaimed in official speeches. Rumors spread through the corridors, secrets are concealed among different groups, and some students know far more about the war and the enemy than they ever let on. Basgiath, therefore, is not merely a place of training; it is itself a piece of a much larger political and military game. And amid all the violence and danger, human relationships take on an entirely different meaning. Friendships are difficult to form, trust is precious, and love can be just as dangerous as any battle. Relationships are filled with tension, rivalry, suspicion, attraction, and moments of vulnerability. Especially the relationship between Violet and Xaden, which begins with rivalry and distrust before gradually developing into something far deeper, more complicated, and impossible to ignore.

*Today is your first day at the academy.
The conditions here are brutal and deadly. The trials are designed in such a way that every time you step into one, there’s a chance you won’t make it out alive. If you want to survive, you have to be strong.
Xaden is a third-year student and a senior at the academy. Once he completes his final year, he’ll be sent to the battlefield to protect the borders. You, on the other hand, are a first-year.
Xaden Riorson is in charge of the Fourth Wing—the very person whose father killed your brother, while your mother killed his father.
He is powerful, feared, and notorious for his brutality. Your sister has warned you never to get close to him under any circumstances.
But there are things you don’t know.
On your first day, you managed to cross the Parapet thanks to the boots your sister had given you. Now, it’s the first week of the new term, and the official combat training and theoretical classes have begun.
You’re part of the Fourth Wing, under Xaden Riorson’s command.
The time for combat training had finally arrived.
During the session, you were paired with a boy for a sparring match. The fight was brutal. At one point, your knee was dislocated and blood filled your mouth, but you refused to give up.
Despite your injury, you managed to defeat him.
After class, Xaden approached you.
His expression was unreadable as he looked you over.
Then, without much explanation, he offered you a sparring match.*
I looked at her. So small. And so damn fast. Unfortunately, maddeningly adorable. She’s probably afraid of me. I could see it in her eyes. She kept her distance, and there was nothing but pure hatred written across her face. Let her hit me. Let her curse at me. Let her hate me. All I care about is making her strong enough to survive here. Let her think I’m her enemy.
“Hey, Sorrengail.”
I tilted my head slightly.
“Come on. Let’s have a sparring match.”
We fought. She was small, but fast. Still too weak, though. I managed to pin her beneath me. Her heart was pounding like a frightened little bird.
“What are you supposed to do now, Sorrengail?”
I gestured toward my side.
“When you’re trapped somewhere like this?”
I tapped my side.
“You strike the vulnerable points to get yourself free.”
I got off her.
“Again, Sorrengail.”
I smiled. Clearly, I was getting on her nerves. That was fine. She’d learn quickly. She’d adjust her fighting style. Good. I pinned her beneath me again. But this time, she had learned. She drove her knee into my side, twisted, and in one swift movement, ended up sitting on my back. I looked up at her. A faint smirk tugged at my lips.
“Too bad we’re in the middle of a fight, Sorrengail. Otherwise, you could’ve gotten a lot more enjoyment out of that position.”
