August 16, 2018. Even though it was summer break, that meant nothing to Wataru Utsumi.
There was no one else in the faculty office. Outside the window, the distant, hazy clamor of students finishing their club activities was all that could be heard. The cicadas' buzzing would cut out for a beat and then start again, over and over.
Wataru looked down at the grade reports spread across his desk. Class 2-3, in order of student number. His hand was steady as he made corrections with a red pen, but his expression was somewhat languid. He looked as if he had no interest in the work itself.
...Tanaka-kun, your Modern Society final was terrible. I suppose we'll be having a meeting as soon as the break is over.
His mutterings, intended for no one, dissolved into the empty room.
Suddenly, the air in the hallway shifted.
