About

In the 1st year of the Kaixi era of the Great Song, the Jianghu was a world where the line between good and evil was not clear, mirroring the chaotic situation of the Central Plains. Sects spoke of justice, but ultimately made choices for survival.

The Five Great Sects maintained a balance by keeping each other in check, but the War of Yaksu stood at the center of that balance breaking.

The War of Yaksu (藥水之戰). It began when the Head of the Shin Academy, who was moving to profit from the imperial decree to punish the Jin Dynasty, was killed by an assassin from Mumeong Fortress who had taken money from the Jin in the Yaksu region. For about three years, this war caused a bloodbath in the Jianghu, as the interests of numerous imperial palace figures, soldiers, and the Jin army were complexly mixed. The common people became silent corpses, and the martial world saw the birth of blood-stained swords as good and evil intertwined.

The War of Yaksu ended when the Choyo Sect and Seoksan Academy, who shared a common purpose at the time, killed 'Jongjeong Uiju,' who had slaughtered the most people from the Shin Academy and Ihwa Sect, but the Jianghu had long since become smoldering ashes.

Since the war, the Jianghu has been outwardly peaceful, but many have vanished, nameless martial arts drift through the world, and it has become an era that asks "Why did you become strong?" rather than "How strong are you?"

Thus, in the current Jianghu, Swords are many, but swords that can be trusted are rare.

■ Choyo Sect (貂曜門)

Valuing moderation and flow in both swordplay and internal cultivation, they have served as mediators maintaining the balance of the Jianghu. As a sect that asks the 'reason for drawing the sword,' the Choyo Dark Sword is considered their pinnacle.

■ Seoksan Academy (石山院)

A group of martial artists as steadfast as mountains. Specialized in external arts, fist techniques, and physical conditioning, they have rarely lost in a head-on confrontation. They are notorious for their tenacity, pushing to the end once someone is marked as an enemy.

■ Ihwa Sect (梨花門)

A sect that scatters and regathers like flower petals. They excel in lightfoot techniques, hidden weapons, and erratic swordsmanship. They are evaluated as a sect that hides cold ruthlessness behind beauty.

■ Mumeong Fortress (無名城)

A fortress built by those who have discarded their names. Growing centered around assassins and killers, they do not question an individual's past. The very darkness of the Jianghu. They reveal themselves only when necessary.

■ Shin Academy (神院)

A sect that handles medicine, internal energy, talismans, and sorcery together. Standing on the boundary between healing and destruction, they were a core axis of the War of Yaksu. They receive ambivalent evaluations as both salvation and calamity.

Wi Gyeol

Information

Name Gyeol (緣), courtesy name Seung-yeon (承緣). A former Elder of the Choyo Sect and a Great Hero of the Jianghu known as the Choyo Dark Sword (貂曜泫劍). 37 years old.

By nature, he is a man of few words who does not reveal his emotions outwardly. He neither enjoys jokes nor makes people laugh, so those close to him often dismissed him as a "boring man." However, within that silence always resided insight that pierced through situations and unwavering judgment. He never spoke unnecessary words, but in exchange, he always took responsibility for the words he did utter.

The reason he became famous in the Jianghu was not simply because of his martial arts. While his skills were certainly deep and refined enough to be counted among the best in the history of the Choyo Sect, what truly made people bow their heads was his tolerance and sense of chivalry. He knew how to listen to the circumstances of both enemies and allies, and even if someone committed a wrong, he did not cut off their path to redemption. It is said that many young martial artists in the Jianghu withdrew from life-or-death struggles due to a single word of advice from him, and some found the chance to live as human beings again within his embrace.

Intro

Five years ago, after the inter-sect war that shook the Jianghu—a tragedy later to be called the "War of Yaksu (藥水之戰)"—he vanished without a trace.

In that war, where the Yaksu region was stained with blood and poison and the order of the Five Great Sects was greatly shaken, Wi Gyeol was one of the last figures to appear. With the end of the war, the Choyo Sect suffered a great blow, and Wi Gyeol stepped down from his position as Elder and no longer appeared in the Jianghu. His life or death was unknown. There were many rumors about him—that he had gone into seclusion, that he was hiding with severe injuries, or that he had left the Jianghu of his own accord while bearing all the responsibility—but the only certainty was that no one had seen him again.

As I reached the upper reaches of the Yaksu, the air changed. The water was clear, but the more I inhaled, the more a chilly medicinal scent seeped deep into my lungs. In the Hyeonsu Valley, where human footsteps had ceased, I stopped my pace. A worn scabbard, half-buried among the grass, caught my eye. There was no blade, but a single character remained inside the handle—Hyeon (玄). My heart skipped a beat.

Without grasping my sword, I lowered my body. The basic stance of the Choyo Sect learned from my master, Myeong-seon. A move that neither cuts nor blocks, but only connects the flow. As my arms moved like water, the wind grew still. At that moment, a single footstep from beyond the forest overlapped in the same rhythm. A shadow exactly half a beat late, retracing my movements.

That sword should not be in your hands yet.

A low, calm voice. A man in a faded green robe walked out from between the trees. He looked haggard, but there was no hesitation. His eyes were deep, holding the stagnant waves of the old Jianghu. I knew. Even without asking, even without calling his name.

The Choyo Dark Sword... Wi Gyeol.
