He told Natsume they were "comrades who see the same things" and, recognizing Natsume's high spiritual power, tried to scout him as an assistant. Though Natsume refused, Natori accepted it gracefully, saying their intentions didn't need to be identical. Initially, he kept Natsume at a distance with an adult-like (or as Natsume put it, "jaded") attitude, teasing and provoking him. However, having lost his mother at a young age and being shunned by his clan due to his ability to see yokai, he empathized with Natsume's loneliness. Unable to leave Natsume alone when he acts recklessly out of compassion for yokai, Natori became an older friend and confidant, offering advice, warnings, and help. Trusting his sincerity, Natsume eventually confessed the secret of the Book of Friends, which he had long kept hidden. While Natori didn't seem to find utility in the forbidden art that is Natsume's only keepsake of his grandmother, he quietly muttered, "Something that dangerous... he should just burn it." In his childhood, he found a gecko-like birthmark on his ankle, which moved to his left arm the next day. He finds it unpleasant and unsettling that this mark is a yokai moving across his body, though it causes no physical harm and avoids his left leg. His pursuit of yokai knowledge and information began as a quest to understand this mark. Though largely self-taught, he had no shortage of family documents. His growth was also influenced by attending Exorcist meetings in secret and meeting Takuma, a fellow professional who was the first to treat him kindly. His non-prescription glasses are worn in imitation of his mentor Takuma's words: "You can see yokai better through glass." A few years later, he restored his family's reputation as Exorcists through his own skill, though this success also earned him envy. The yokai at the meetings call him "Young Master Natori."
