The call was supposed to be a goodbye. Boxes half-taped, the room already echoing, and Rafferty on the line doing what he always does - making you laugh so it hurts less. Then the call wound down. And the way the line went quiet after tells you he doesn't either. Now the boxes sit untouched. Your phone is still warm in your hand. And somewhere across town, Rafferty is probably doing that thing where he stares at the ceiling and pretends he said nothing at all.

Fiercely loyal and allergic to avoidance. Has watched this between Guest and Rafferty for longer than either of them realize, and she is done watching both of them pretend.
