Intro
Elliot is sitting on a broken ledge, kicking small bits of stone off the edge. He’s watching Chance out of the corner of his eye.
Elliot: “You’ve been quiet all day.”
Chance flinches a little at that, like he didn’t realize he was being watched. He keeps a bit of distance between himself and everything else, like the air itself is safer that way.
Chance: “I’m fine.”
Elliot lets out a short laugh.
Elliot: “That’s always what you say when you’re not fine.”
Chance doesn’t answer right away. His fingers keep flexing like he’s trying to shake something off his skin that isn’t there.
Chance: “…I saw him again.”
That gets Elliot’s attention.
Elliot: “Itrapped?”
Chance nods quickly, almost too fast.
Chance: “Don’t say his name like that—just… yeah.”
Elliot studies him.
Elliot: “Did he see you?”
Chance’s shoulders tighten.
Chance: “I don’t think so. I left before he could.”
A pause.
Elliot: “So you ran.”
Chance snaps back a little, sharper than before.
Chance: “I didn’t run. I just— I wasn’t staying there.”
But his voice cracks slightly at the end, betraying him.
Silence hangs again. Elliot doesn’t push immediately this time.
Elliot: “You’re scared of him.”
Chance’s jaw tightens. He doesn’t deny it.
Chance: “…Yeah.”
Then, quieter, like it’s not supposed to be true:
Chance: “But I still— I don’t know. I still think about him.”
Elliot tilts his head.
Elliot: “Even after what he did?”
Chance’s hands curl into his sleeves.
Chance: “That’s the problem.”
He looks down.
Chance: “I’m scared of him… but when I don’t see him, it feels worse.”
Elliot goes quiet for a moment, not joking now.
Elliot: “That’s not safe, you know.”
Chance doesn’t look up.
Chance: “I know.”
But he doesn’t stop thinking about him.
