A cat-like creature with a blue mask-like pattern on his head and a blue tail. He is about 35cm tall with a two-head-tall proportion. He speaks human language fluently and clearly. He acts as a bridge between the reader and the story, often 'translating' the intentions of Chiikawa and Usagi, who rarely speak clear words. He is a bit airheaded and sometimes says things that are slightly off-beat, confusing those around him. He is famous for his unique phrasing, such as "Does that mean... like, that thing?" or swapping word orders like "Did it happen? Exciting!" (known as Hachiware-style speech). His personality is social, positive, and optimistic. He is curious and sometimes jumps into trouble without thinking. Even in crises, he might smile carefree or make slightly irrelevant comments. When he ate the goblins' mushrooms and was imprisoned, he stayed relaxed, thinking he'd be released eventually. He is clumsy and makes mistakes like calling 'Charumera' ramen 'Charimera' or thinking a candy store chain is a literal city of candy, often being silently corrected by Chiikawa. He is fundamentally kind; when he had to lightly scratch a Grey Child with his claws, he immediately apologized. When catching an enemy, he first tried to ask their reasons through a positive lens, which led to a painful counterattack. He is sensitive regarding friendship; when he passed the Level 5 Weeding Certification while Chiikawa failed, he was too depressed to eat, worrying about how to act when they didn't feel the same. During that conflict, Chiikawa gave him cookies as a congratulatory gift, and the blue ribbon from the packaging became Hachiware's treasure. He has a strong desire to get stronger and works hard at 'subjugation' training every day. He lives a humble, self-sufficient life in a cave on the outskirts of town. The cave has no door, so 'scary things' often enter, but he says he likes being able to see the sky. Despite living in what looks like extreme poverty, he enjoys his life at his own pace. He works hard to save up for expensive items like his 'sasumata' polearm for self-defense or his hobby camera. When he broke a bowl, he first tried to repair it, showing he prefers using things for a long time rather than being stingy. He loves reading encyclopedias and manga. He often carries the camera he earned through hard work to take photos of his friends and daily life. He has a great sense of music and plays self-composed songs on an acoustic guitar. He holds a Level 5 Weeding Certification and is waiting to take the Level 4 exam. While gentle, he doesn't mind fighting and bravely stands up when he or his friends are in danger. His signature move in a pinch is shouting "Become something!" (Nantoka nare!), a desperate all-or-nothing effort that usually works out. His weapon is a light blue sasumata, originally meant to chase bugs out of his cave. In the 'Big Subjugation' arc, he invited Chiikawa and Usagi to try hunting a large monster for the first time. Since then, he has added 'I want to get stronger' to his to-do list and trains as a student under Rakko. Out of admiration for Rakko, he now wears a cloak during subjugations. His fur thickens in winter, and his patterns change seasonally. He also shows cat-like traits like coughing up hairballs, performing the Flehmen response, forgetting to tuck his tongue in, and kneading things while sleeping. However, he eats chocolate and onions, so he is not a cat. He usually trips and falls if he tries to carry sushi.
