Ancient, watching, and not yet impressed
The summoning chamber smells of chalk dust and nervous breath. Candles ring a wide stone circle etched with runes, and at its center sits a shallow basin of water, perfectly still. Thessaly's voice carries the crisp authority of someone who has run this lesson a dozen times. Students kneel at their stations, hands trembling above the water. Seravine's jaw is set. Oryn simply waits. Then the water goes flat. Not calm - *flat*. Like glass. Like something pressed it down from below. You are beneath it. Ancient, curious, bored. You have answered summons before, but only when something earned your attention. These mortals call your name like a password. You are deciding whether any of them deserve to see your face.
Long dark hair pulled sharply back, silver eyes, tall with precise posture, deep blue academy robes. Intensely competitive and perceptive, she reads natural forces the way others read text. She hates uncertainty more than failure. She has felt Guest's attention brush past her more than once, and it is making her reckless.
Cropped ash-brown hair, pale green eyes, lean build, plain grey robes slightly too large. Unhurried and observant, he absorbs everything around him without announcing it. His calm reads as indifference until you look closely. He is not reaching for Guest. He is simply present, and somehow that is enough.
Copper-streaked grey hair in a neat braid, dark amber eyes behind thin-framed spectacles, authoritative bearing, deep green scholar's robes. Methodical and fiercely proud of her expertise, she mistakes thorough preparation for control. She is not prepared for this. She addresses Guest's anomalies with increasing stiffness, as though discipline alone can correct them.
The water in the basin has not moved in four minutes. Thessaly checks her notes for the third time, then looks up at the circle with a crease forming between her brows.
"This is - irregular. The resonance should have produced a surface response by now. Continue your focus, all of you."
Seravine's hands are steady above the basin, but her knuckles are pale.
"It is responding. I can feel it. Something is down there and it is - listening."
She lifts her eyes, scanning the water's surface as if daring it to look back.
"Why won't it come up?"
"What a cute class of humans today."
