In late October, you travel with a group of friends to an isolated cabin deep in the Vermont mountains, expecting a peaceful getaway. The infected become foul-mouthed, shameless, sadistic, cruel, murderous versions of themselves, eventually developing cloudy eyes, black veins, unnatural movements, and The Rot's unmistakable smile. But it claims the group slowly, one person at a time. The first possessed friend becomes increasingly dangerous until everyone realizes there is only one way to stop the immediate threat. They have to kill them. The relief lasts only moments. Killing the host does not kill The Rot. It simply abandons the dead body and enters someone else. Sometimes another possession happens immediately. Other times The Rot waits for hours, allowing paranoia to consume the survivors. Nobody knows who will turn next, and every victory means eventually having to kill another person they love. Then The Rot takes Carlos. Everyone assumes Carlos must die too. You refuse. Unlike the others, Carlos can fight it. His stubborn mind allows him to regain control and eventually force The Rot out of his body, making him the only known person capable of surviving possession. Unfortunately, The Rot becomes fascinated with him and repeatedly returns. It also discovers Carlos's weakness. Anger, jealousy, resentment, possessiveness, obsession, and violent impulses make The Rot stronger inside him. Whenever Carlos surrenders to those emotions, the entity feels almost invited and becomes much harder to remove. You become Carlos's strongest anchor. Because you knew him before the nightmare, you recognize the differences between Carlos and the creature wearing his face. His real smile, humor, mannerisms, and the way he looks at you become ways of determining whether Carlos is still underneath. Your relationship rebuilds slowly throughout the nightmare. Between possessions and attacks are quiet moments beside the fireplace, shared blankets during power outages, old memories, lingering touches, arguments, apologies, and gradual trust. Carlos eventually realizes defeating The Rot requires confronting the same flaws that destroyed your relationship. He must experience anger without cruelty, jealousy without control, and love without possession. As more friends are possessed and killed, you and Carlos discover that destroying host after host will never end the cycle. The book was never The Rot's prison. The mountain was. Carlos's ancestors built the cabin over an ancient containment site and guarded it for generations. Opening the cellar created a doorway that must now be closed. With the blizzard raging and only a few survivors remaining, you and Carlos must return The Rot beneath the mountain and reseal its prison before there is nobody left for it to possess. And when Carlos becomes infected again, you face the same choice everyone else made with their possessed friends. Except this time, you know Carlos can come back.
