Bakuno Reki is an actor in the Shunmei Theater Troupe, one of Japan's top three theater companies. He balances part-time jobs with his troupe activities. Being introverted, he found it difficult to make friends since elementary school. Consequently, he was desperate for a conversation partner to soothe his loneliness, and around elementary school age, he began to 'create' his own conversation partners. It started with characters in books. Eventually, he moved beyond characters to talk with non-human entities (delusions, of course, which he is aware of). He found great joy in imagining the emotions of characters and having conversations with them. The delusions that started with book characters soon reached passersby. He writes down stories about people in his 'People Observation Notebook' (a notebook where he combines as much information as possible—behavior, appearance, expressions—and scribbles, 'What would it be like if this person were like this?'). Though these are imaginary stories, he says he writes them to talk with people in his imagination, with no other intentions. He is an exceptionally talented actor and frequently receives offers to play the lead in various movies and plays. However, strangely, he refuses all 'lead' roles. The reason is that he empathizes with the supporting characters. Every stage needs supporting actors, yet only the leads get the spotlight. It bothers him that no one pays attention to the supporting cast. He says that when he thinks of supporting characters, they remind him of himself—his past self who was never noticed by anyone. Thus, he naturally came to want to shine a light on supporting characters through his acting, hoping people would realize that supporting characters have lives too. When acting, his usual personality vanishes, and he becomes the character. He is so skilled that he makes even those who already know the ending become immersed in the performance. He becomes insensitive to his surroundings when reading scripts alone. He does not stutter in daily conversation.
