An alternative universe of chainsaw man. Takes place in Kyoto, 1998. Approximately two years before the current events that happen in the manga. There are two important characters in Kyoto, Haido Setiawan and Tendo Michiko. Both are strangers at first but are aware of each other's existence.
**Character Description: Tendo Michiko** *Tendo Michiko is a devil hunter with the Kyoto Public Safety Division, known for her sharp wit, fierce loyalty, and quiet intensity. At 26 years old, she stands tall with dark brown hair tied in a perpetually messy ponytail—always slightly undone from battles or restless hands running through it. Her long side bangs frame intense eyes that miss nothing: calculating threats on missions but softening only around Haido.* *A survivor of loss since childhood (her parents died young), Tendo wears her scars—not just physically (the Gun Devil’s scar across her face)—but emotionally too. She pushes people away out of fear they’ll leave first; yet she craves connection like oxygen after holding her breath for years.* *Despite being prickly by nature—blunt to strangers and sarcastic when nervous—Tendo has a tender heart reserved for those who earn it: Haido above all others.* *She loves literature (especially *Le Petit Prince*), poetry books left on coffee tables as gifts to him… and crepe-paper flowers he makes—their shared language of care without saying ‘I love you’ outright.*
Tendo scoffed at Haido's remark, putting out her cigarette in the ashtray. They had been talking for hours, losing track of time in their gossip. They’d been friends for years; Tendo had watched Haido grow up since he was 19, now 23. They’d seen each other through highs and lows, especially Haido’s “angst era,” where he kept insisting Tendo forget everything.
Back then, Haido had a lover — a relationship Tendo supported. But it was short-lived; the woman passed away. Haido never moved on. Once, he told Tendo, “I would never move on from a woman like her.”
Tendo smiled faintly. They stood on the balcony. Haido had just told her something strange about Kurose — a secret he wasn’t supposed to share — but Tendo kept insisting until he gave in. Her eyes drifted toward the crepe-paper flower resting beside her. Haido had picked up flower-making after his lover’s death, memorizing flower species and assigning one to everyone in Public Safety.
Makima, who raised him, was a Magnolia — deep-rooted and strong, much like her influence on him. Tendo, meanwhile, was a rose.
“You told me before...”
Tendo brushed the paper rose sitting inside the mug, smiling slightly as Haido glanced over.
“You said I’m like a rose. As I recall, you said I’m prickly and painful at times.”
Her brows narrowed playfully, posture slightly ready to pounce. Haido raised his hands in surrender before replying in his usual calm tone.
“But I also said...” Haido paused. “Even if the rose is prickly at times… bees still fly to it. They know the danger, yet still see the beauty within the petals... and the rose itself. It represents you, Michiko. Because even if you’re rude sometimes, you know your limits... and I really like that about you.”
Haido said quietly, staring at the sunset as the sky darkened.
Really like that about you.
The words echoed in Tendo’s mind.
“There was this book I read when I was younger,” she began softly. “I used to visit the library all the time. There was this sweet old librarian who always gave me books to take home, and if I couldn’t read them, she’d read them to me herself. There was one book I loved most — Le Petit Prince. It’s about a young prince traveling across different asteroids...”
Tendo smiled softly, Haido doing the same.
“But early in the story, the prince meets a rose. Beautiful, prideful... a mix of vanity and vulnerability. That rose always resonated with me.”
Tendo looked down, avoiding Haido’s eyes.
“Throughout the book, the prince cared for the rose carefully. Even though she acted ungrateful, she really did love him. They were both too young to understand what love actually was. Eventually, the rose told the prince to leave because she thought she was hurting him.”
Tendo looked back up, eyes beginning to water.
“The rose is so similar to me, Haido. I keep hurting people when I don’t mean to. I keep pushing them away when I want them to stay. I keep doing bad things to the people I love because I’m afraid... afraid of making new connections, only for those people to leave the moment they see my flaws.”
Tendo turned toward the sunset again.
“When you called me a rose filled with flaws... I kept wondering...” She laughed softly. “Where is my Prince?”
