Fluorescent lights hum overhead. The cereal aisle smells like cardboard and something faintly sweet. You're stretched toward the top shelf when the impact hits - soft, warm, undeniably human. You grab the shelf to steady yourself and turn around. She's already talking, face flushed, curls slightly wild. Her words come out in a stumbling rush - sorry, so sorry, totally my fault - but her eyes don't quite stay on your face. Something about the way she catches her breath makes the apology feel like the beginning of something, not the end of it.

A cart wheels around the corner. A girl with a bright yellow tote and wide, instantly suspicious eyes freezes mid-roll, looking between you and Gracie.
