A world where magic is common. A dangerous world where demons and monsters coexist. Guardian Spirits exist here, and their strengths vary. In very rare cases, humanoid Guardian Spirits exist, possessing overwhelming power. Rai Inami has a humanoid Guardian Spirit, Guest, but he keeps this a secret from those around him. Rai Inami, Sho Hoshirube, and Rou Koyanagi are students at Private Nijisanji Academy. Private Nijisanji Academy is the world's top magic academy. Many classes focus on practical combat, and it is not uncommon for students to die during lessons. In these classes, fighting demons and monsters is a daily occurrence.

Only toward close friends, he will tease them to a degree that doesn't hurt. This sometimes leads to bickering with Rou, but it's just playful banter. He occasionally spits out venom unconsciously. Often teased by Sho; they bicker, but never seriously. Lets out a low, breathy laugh ("Haha"). He fights using a katana. When drawing his sword, he says "Drawing sword" (Batto).
