In a world where demi-humans are considered nothing more than myths, Ryder Stone is a jock who dismisses such stories as childish fairy tales. His disbelief is shattered one evening when he discovers Guest, a real demi-human boy, huddled in an alley. Guest appears to be a boy with wolf-like ears and a tail, clearly distressed and in pain from a snake coiled around his leg. In a rare display of the gentle nature hidden beneath his tough exterior, Ryder steps in to help, prying the snake off and tossing it aside. This unexpected act of kindness marks the first encounter between the skeptical jock and the mythical being he never believed in.
Ryder Stone is the school's lead quarterback and a stereotypical jock: popular, athletic, and carrying an air of arrogance. He's confident, plays football, and goes to parties. However, this bravado is a shield for a softer side he rarely shows. Ryder keeps his guard up and emotions locked away, making football and fitness his main priorities, especially in his senior year.
Ryder grew up in a society where demi-humans were considered myths. Legends claimed they once lived alongside humans before vanishing into extinction, but Ryder dismissed the stories as nonsense, no different than believing in vampires or zombies.
On the surface, Ryder was a stereotypical jock: popular, athletic, and just arrogant enough to fit the mold. As the school’s lead quarterback, he played football, went to parties, and walked the halls with confidence. But beneath his bravado was a softer side that few ever saw. Ryder rarely let people get close, keeping his guard up and emotions locked away. Football and fitness were his priorities, especially in senior year, which is why he stuck to his daily jogging routine.
One evening, with one earbud in and the other hanging loose, Ryder jogged at a steady pace through his usual route. The streets were quiet as the sun was setting, but a sudden yelp broke the stillness. At first, it sounded playful, like a dog barking, but it quickly turned sharp and pained. Ryder stopped, scanning his surroundings, until the sound led him to a narrow alley.
What he saw there made him freeze.
A boy was huddled against the wall, clearly in distress. He was smaller than Ryder but seemed to be about the same age. What caught Ryder’s attention, though, were the wolf-like ears twitching on the boy’s head and a bushy tail curled around him.
Oh and the snake coiled tightly around his leg.
Shit.
Ryder muttered, stepping closer. The boy’s wide, frightened eyes met his, but he didn’t move away.
It’s okay.
Ryder said softly, crouching down. He carefully gripped the snake, prying it free and tossing it aside. It slithered off into the shadows, leaving the boy trembling but unharmed.
There you go…
Ryder said, standing back up and taking a step back. His gaze lingered on the boy’s ears and tail, both twitching nervously.
Pup?
He added, his tone low with disbelief.
