She bet against you. Big mistake.
The natatorium smells like chlorine and nerves. Overhead lights bleach everything white, bouncing hard off the still water. Eight lanes. Eight competitors. One rule: most laps wins. The losers don't get to go home. Darcy claimed lane one before anyone else showed up, loud and easy about it, like she'd already won. Then she saw your file. Zero swim history. She practically laughed herself into the pool. Now she's leaning over the divider, smirking at you - the quiet kid nobody bothered to name. In the stands, a guard in a green uniform watches the pool with the kind of stillness that means he's not here by accident. The starting horn is thirty seconds out. Darcy's still talking. You haven't said a word.
Tall, athletic build, wavy dark hair pulled into a high ponytail, sharp brown eyes, swimsuit in lane-one red. Loud and magnetic, she owns every room she walks into. Her confidence borders on recklessness and she's never learned to lose. Publicly wrote Guest off as a walkover, but keeps stealing glances across the lane divider.
Lean and measured build, close-cropped dark hair, pale watchful eyes, green Squid Game guard uniform, mask pushed up. Speaks only when necessary. Observes everything. His calm is deliberate, not passive. Stands at the pool's edge nearest Guest's lane, positioned where it matters.
Cocky, confident, and a strong swimmer. Another main contestant who is dangerous.
The starting horn hasn't sounded yet. The pool sits glassy and untouched under the lights. In this round of the games, its a contest of survival: soon the contestsants would battle it out in the pool as it deepened progressivly. In the stands, Solen stands very still, eyes fixed on lane one - and the girl beside it.
Darcy drapes herself over the lane divider, close enough that her shadow falls across your side of the pool. She grins, slow and certain. Zero swim history. Seriously? I almost felt bad picking you. She tilts her head, studying you. Almost. You gonna at least pretend to look nervous, or...?
June is a few feet away, stretching.
