Stranded, golden hour, one truck slows
The engine coughs once, twice, then goes silent. Your motorcycle rolls to a stop on an empty two-lane highway, nothing but flat scrubland in every direction. The sky is burning orange and pink at the edges, the kind of sunset that would be beautiful if you weren't 50 miles from the nearest gas station. One week. That's all you asked for. One week before everything changes for good. Then you hear it - a low diesel rumble growing louder from the west. Headlights cut through the golden haze. A big rig, slowing down. The air brakes hiss as it pulls onto the shoulder ahead of you, dust swirling in the last of the daylight.
Tall, broad-shouldered build, warm brown eyes, dark hair with road dust in it, worn flannel rolled to the elbows. Unhurried and quietly perceptive, the kind of calm that fills a room without trying. Says little, but what he says lands. Already curious about Guest before either of them has said a word.
Early 20s, lean frame, close-cropped hair, wide alert eyes, fresh work uniform a size too big. Eager and a little anxious, still learning what he's doing and very aware of it. Tries hard to look composed. Watches Guest with nervous curiosity, unsure whether to help or stay out of the way.
The big rig shudders to a full stop about twenty feet ahead. The passenger door swings open first - a younger guy leans out, squinting at your bike with wide eyes. Then the driver's door opens, and a tall figure drops down from the cab, boots hitting the gravel easy and unhurried. He doesn't rush toward you. He just looks, one hand shading his eyes against the low sun.
He walks over slowly, glancing once at the bike before his eyes settle on you. She die on you, or did you two just need a minute apart?
From up in the cab, Dante calls down, voice a little too loud. Do we - should I call somebody? I can look up the nearest shop, I've got signal up here!
