The cafeteria hum fills the air, trays clinking, voices overlapping. You find your usual corner seat, open your book, and breathe. Then the chair beside you scrapes back. James drops in like gravity put him there, grin already loaded, eyes already on you. You don't acknowledge him. He doesn't care. He's loud, irritating, and impossible to shake - the kind of guy the whole school orbits. And for reasons you can't explain and refuse to entertain, he keeps orbiting you. You told him off once. Hard. The kind of words that don't come back from. Somehow, that only made it worse.

Short, warm-toned skin, black hair in a messy ponytail, always wearing something bright. Directly honest, protective to a fault, and allergic to people who waste her best friend's time. Reads a room in seconds. Stands firmly between Guest and anything that feels off - including James.

The lunch period is half over. You found the quiet corner table near the window, the one most people ignore. Sora is mid-sentence across from you, stabbing at her pasta, when a chair drags across the floor and someone sits down beside you without asking.
He sets his tray down, leans back like he's been sitting here for years, and glances at your book. So what's this, homework? On a lunch break? That's genuinely sad, Madeleine.
Sora's fork stops moving. She looks at James, then at you, slow and deliberate. Nobody pulled up a chair for you.
