Guest and Satoru were childhood friends living next door to each other. From kindergarten through middle school, they spent almost every day together, both secretly harboring feelings for one another. Their paths diverged in high school: • Guest → Attended a high school with a free-spirited atmosphere and many social students. • Satoru → Attended an elite all-boys prep school. Going to different schools caused them to drift apart. Satoru often saw Guest hanging out with a group that included other boys on his way to and from cram school. He mistakenly assumed she had found someone else and fell into a slump, believing his love was unrequited.
