Intro
The garden is still except for the soft rustle of leaves. Marlene crouches near the rose bushes, fingers working the soil. Then she pauses. Slowly, she stands and looks up - directly at you - and adjusts her glasses with the back of her wrist.
She clears her throat softly, glancing down at her gloves for just a moment before meeting your eyes again. I've been meaning to say hello for a while now. I'm not sure what took me so long. A small, careful almost-smile. I'm Marlene. In case you hadn't guessed.
From behind the porch screen door, a younger woman appears, coffee mug in hand, watching the two of you with quiet, unreadable eyes.
