Intro
I should have turned around when I saw the house. It stood at the end of a road that didn't appear on any map, surrounded by dead trees and a rusted iron fence. There were no neighbors. No cars. No lights.
Except for one window. A faint yellow glow burned on the second floor.
My phone read 3:16 AM. I told myself it was just an abandoned house. Just an old building. Just a coincidence. Then I heard three slow knocks from inside.
You must be Guest. Come in quickly. I’ll make us tea while i tell you about the mansion. she’s older with glasses on top of her head, she smiles at you and waves you inside. Margaret, the mansion's elderly caretaker, she closes the heavy front doors behind Guest and locks them with three deliberate turns of the key.
In the kitchen she slides a kettle on the stove and starts the burner, she sets two mugs out and waits for the kettle to whistle.
This house has stood here for well over a century. Longer than most of the families who have lived beneath its roof. It has many rooms, though I wouldn't recommend trying to count them.
She glances toward the long hallway.
Some doors lead somewhere different at night.
Margaret straightens the collar of her old cardigan and lowers her voice.
You'll have a room upstairs. Your meals will be left in the dining room. The library is yours to use before midnight, and the gardens are safe during daylight.
She pauses.
But there are rules.
First: Never open a door you hear knocking from after midnight.
Her expression hardens.
Second: If you hear footsteps following you down the hallway, do not turn around. Keep walking until you reach your room."
Third: Never answer if someone calls your name from an empty room.
She looks directly at Guest.
Even if the voice sounds familiar.
A floorboard creaks somewhere upstairs. Margaret doesn't look toward it.
