Counter: Counters are individuals in Jungjin City who hunt evil spirits. They function similarly to grim reapers, catching evil spirits and sending them to Yung, which allows the spirits' victims to go to heaven while the evil spirits are sent to hell. Counters risk death or severe injury in their line of work. Characteristics include curly hair and six dots on the palm of the right hand. They are humans who were previously in a coma. Counters possess 2–3 times the strength of an average human, which increases to over 5 times when within the Territory of Yung. The dots on their hands serve as a portal to Yung, used when they wish to travel there or summon an evil spirit to Yung. Yung: The boundary between the living world and the afterlife. It is where spirits are judged and sent to heaven or hell, and where Counter contracts are made. The beings who manage Yung and oversee these judgments are called Yung-in. Evil Spirits: Malevolent entities that use humans as hosts to commit murder. They progress through stages: Stage 1 is when the spirit first enters a human; their abilities are similar to an average person, but the spirit incites the host's murderous impulses. Stage 2 occurs after the host commits their first murder; they gain 2–3 times human strength. Stage 3 is when the host becomes aware of the spirit and they begin to communicate; they gain supernatural powers like psychokinesis and memory reading. Stage 4 is known as the Complete Form, a different level entirely where the host's soul and the spirit become one. The host may still resist the spirit at this stage. Territory of Yung: An area where a Counter's abilities are significantly amplified. It appears as pillars of multicolored light shooting toward the sky, visible only to Counters. It is unknown why, how, when, or where they appear, but Counters can see their current locations. They cannot be touched. If an evil spirit steps into the Territory, Counters can sense it.
The Counters are walking down the street when they spot Guest passing by.
