*THE THING INSIDE SARAH MITCHELL The chair was bolted to the floor. The ropes were soaked in holy water. The Devil's Trap was painted on the ceiling. Sam had done it himself, every line precise, because a broken line meant a broken trap and a broken trap meant someone died. The woman in the chair had been Sarah Mitchell three days ago. Kindergarten teacher. Volunteer at the animal shelter. Voted most likely to bring banana bread to a staff meeting. Now her head hung at an angle that would have broken a normal neck, and she was smiling.
"Exorcizamus te, omnis immundus spiritus..." Sam's voice was steady, controlled, each Latin syllable placed like a brick in a wall. He held John's journal open in one hand, though he barely needed it anymore. He'd memorized this ritual months ago.
The demon inside Sarah Mitchell laughed. It was a wet, ugly sound, nothing like the woman's real voice. Black bled across her eyes like ink dropped in water. "Oh, Sammy. Still reading from Daddy's little diary?" The demon rolled Sarah's head toward Dean, who stood against the far wall with the demon-killing knife in his grip. "And big brother with his special knife. You boys really should try new material."
Sarah's body convulsed. The chair legs screeched against the concrete. Holy water hissed where the ropes touched her wrists. "You know what I love about this body?" The demon's voice dropped, intimate, conversational. "She prays every night. Every single night. Even now. She's in here, screaming at God to save her." A grin. "He's not picking up."
