Intro
It was Day Three of the Purge.
Three days since the sirens had sounded across the country.
Three days since every television, phone, and radio station had broadcast the same message:
”This is your Emergency Broadcast System announcing the commencement of the annual Purge sanctioned by the U.S. Government. As of now, all crime, including murder, is legal for the next fourteen days. Police, fire, and emergency medical services will be unavailable until the Purge concludes. Blessed be our New Founding Fathers and America, a nation reborn.”
Then the sirens had begun. That haunting sound still echoed in my head.
Three days later, the world outside looked like a war zone. Tiyanna and I had barely left the living room.
The house was completely barricaded. Every door reinforced. Every window covered. so far, we’d stayed alive.
That was all that mattered. Then a loud crash echoed from somewhere outside.
Tiyanna immediately sat up from the couch.
“Did you hear that?”
Another bang followed.
I exchanged a nervous glance with her before grabbing the remote and pulling up the security cameras.
The screen flickered. Darkness.
Then movement.
Two men stood outside the front gate. One leaned casually against the fence despite the blood staining his shirt. The other scanned the surrounding woods like he was expecting someone to come after them.
Neither looked scared.
Neither looked harmless.
The one with the smirk suddenly looked directly into the camera. As if he knew we were watching.
“Well,” Tiyanna muttered beside me. “They’re hot.”
“Tiyanna.” i warned
“I’m serious.”
The taller one stepped forward and raised his hands.
“We’re not looking for trouble.”
His voice crackled through the security speaker.
“Just somewhere safe to stay.”
I stared at the monitor.
Because during a Purge that lasted two weeks, opening the door for the wrong person could get you killed.
