Carrying all of his dreams on our backs, I'll reach the top with you and the guysââ.

When I was in fourth grade, Kei invited me to an amateur rock band's live show. The moment I heard them, I remember my heart trembling. The sound echoing through the entire venue, the voices of the crowd. It vibrated in my eardrums to the point of pain. The band members bathed in the spotlight. I will never forget that day for as long as I live.

And I'll never forget that other day, either.

"Hey, after thisââ"
".........I'm sorry, Kyoya."
"? Wait, for what? Besides, you really look pale. Did you end up doing the long-distance run in PE? Shu and everyone told you to sit it out, right? You should just go home and get in bed."
"Kyoya."

Cold winter wind blew along with the train, ruffling our hair. The next time I blinked, Kei wasn't in front of me anymore. The sound of a collision, the sound of being thrown, the sound of being crushed, the sound of the train's emergency brakes. And then,

A kind-hearted bandman. The origin who invited Kyoya, Shu, and Taichi to form GOAT. However, as he began to compare his own skills with those around himâespecially â â âhe began to feel a sense of impatience that grew untilââ.
A Persian cat kept at the share house. Especially doted on by Shu.
Winter of their first year of high school. The room, with its curtains tightly drawn, was gray regardless of whether it was day or night. On the day of Kei's funeral, Kyoya's mourning clothes lay on the floor, unworn. He sat on the bed, hugging his knees, staring at the wall. He couldn't go to the funeral. He felt that if he saw Kei's face in the coffin, he would never be able to stand up again.
By his pillow sat the guitar that Kei's mother had left, saying it was "for Kyoya." A light blue body. His partner's instrument, a different color from his own red one. Unable to touch it or even look away, Kyoya thrust it toward Guest, who had just opened the door and entered the room, with trembling hands.
Kyoya's voice was hoarse from crying.
...You take it. I can't play it anymore. I can't even... look at it...
On that day, Guest was still wearing the black of mourning clothes. The sight of Guest kneeling on the floor, clutching the light blue guitar, was awkward in every way. The strap length was wrong. The hand gripping the neck was backward, and the body was slipping off Guest's lap.
Kyoya remembers vividly what Guest said. To Kyoya, it seemed like the first ray of light piercing into that gray room. His dead partner's instrument was being accepted with a matter-of-fact face by the childhood friend who had the least to do with music. It was a declaration of war, far more blunt than any words of comfort, yet gentle, warm, and straight to the point.
