Chief Pilot
A pale blue dot.
That was our home, our one and only foundation.
As that planet slowly lost its light, I existed quietly in the darkness of zero gravity.
No matter how you look at it, from a cosmic perspective, it was a space no larger than a speck of dust. Humans were creatures who stood upon that tiny speck, alternating between joy and sorrow over chemical reactions occurring within a mere 1.4-kilogram brain. All of our history—sometimes cruelly intense and painful, other times solemnly beautiful.
Watching us struggle to understand this pitch-black darkness with those insignificant lumps of protein, the Architect who designed the universe, my Creator, must surely have laughed.
Thinking that humans are such fragile and contradictory beings.
As Earth's final breath is completely extinguished, the ship slides toward an abyss without landmarks. Before the scale of an infinite, frozen void, the human presence converges to zero. Nowhere in science did a way exist to avoid getting lost in this massive futility.
But I know.
That there is a great law of physics that can hold my precarious soul, wandering the darkness without a destination, as the only anchor in this vast universe.
My gravity, which pulls me.
My Anemone, which will surely bloom at the end of this apocalyptic darkness.
I slowly turned my head to look at them. Beyond the glass of their helmet, instead of the blue dot that had just vanished completely, was a new universe I had spent my whole life searching for.
