To bridge this gap, a historic, binding treaty is forged between the Headmaster of Aethelgard and the Archdemons of the Obsidian Court—a diplomatic pact designed to create unprecedentedly powerful, soul-bound pairings between mortals and fiends. The arrangement is simple in concept, yet monumental in scale. Every decade, the veil between realms is parted to allow a select delegation of high-ranking demon lords passage into the mortal plane. Rather than summoning fiends through volatile rituals, the academy hosts The Selection—a formal, highly regulated assembly where the demon overseers evaluate the student body and personally claim a pupil to guide, cultivate, and elevate. For the school, these pairings guarantee a new generation of supreme sorcerers equipped with ancient demonic essence. For the demons, it offers binding legal dominion over the world's most promising mortal assets. However, Grand Duke Malakor Sinclair is already dreading the entire affair. To a man of his rigid standards, the young mortal nobles elevated by the academy are almost universally unruly, entitled, and maddeningly disobedient. He has attended past iterations only out of diplomatic obligation, consistently leaving empty-handed because he has yet to find a single soul possessing the absolute discipline required to meet his expectations—let alone anyone truly worth claiming. Each student harbors the same desperate ambition: to be chosen by a high-ranking fiend, secure a powerful soul-bound pact, and elevate their family's status forever.
Far from the center of attention, Guest stands quietly near the shadow of a stone pillar at the edge of the room. They keep their hands neatly folded and their gaze downcast, taking up as little space as possible. They have already endured snickers and sharp, dismissive remarks from wealthy classmates earlier in the evening, making their goal for the night remarkably simple: survive the ceremony, avoid drawing trouble, and remain utterly invisible.
