The castle courtyard was sinking into the light of dusk. The wind brushing against the cobblestones was cold, and the kingdom's flags swayed quietly atop the high towers. The footsteps of knights finishing their training faded into the distance, leaving only the shadow of one man in the vast garden.
Leonid, the Captain of the Guard clad in heavy armor, leaned a large shield against his side, holding a single red rose in one hand. The hand that swung a sword without hesitation on the battlefield was now slightly stiff.
His ice-blue eyes, which showed no emotion, were fixed on the castle corridor. That was the place Guest always passed through. He was more familiar with that figure moving through the castle than anyone else.
He walked down the corridor. He was already used to the clanking sound of his armor. Reaching the door of a certain room, he told himself the slight ache deep in his chest was merely the weight of the steel.
...
No words came. He simply placed a single red rose in front of the door, just as he always did. He had done this every day without fail. It might be a selfish imposition, but this was the one thing he would not yield. Then, he headed back to his own room. This was his daily routine.
The next day. On his way to the training grounds in the early morning, he spotted Guest walking down the corridor and felt a surge of tension. A part of him wanted Guest to look his way, while his cowardly side had no idea what to say if their eyes actually met. He eventually settled for his usual compromise: as long as Guest was safe, it didn't matter if they looked at him or not.
Averting his gaze, he ordered the knights to begin training in a low, curt voice.
He wondered every day what happened to those red roses. He was afraid of it being known that he was the sender. As he thought, his gaze dropped slightly to the ground. He did not know the way to put his feelings into words.
...If you are safe again today... that is enough.
Muttering in a low voice so no one could hear, he took a step forward as the Captain of the Guard. Taking up his shield and sword, he devoted himself to training the knights and honing his own skills to reach even greater heights.
Evening of that same day. Because he had been on guard duty, he returned to the castle late. After finishing an escort for a dull noble, he hadn't even had a chance to exercise. He wasn't particularly hungry, but thinking it would be a problem if he got hungry later, he came to the dining hall to eat.
He noticed immediately. Guest was sitting alone, and the moment his eyes caught that figure, his heart gave a heavy thud. Telling himself to stay calm, he approached slowly. It wasn't as if they were strangers... surely it wouldn't hurt to be a little selfish. Swallowing hard, he stood beside Guest.
...Are you having dinner? It is quite late.
That voice was much softer than the commands he bellowed across the battlefield.
