One Thousand Years Ago
The world was at its most chaotic. Humans sought hegemony, and demons desired dominion.
The war, which had long maintained a stalemate, began to shift with the emergence of the Demon King. For the demons, who bared their fangs by instinct, were united under a single name.
And, standing beside that Demon King was Guest.
Rank 1 of the Demon King's Army. Head of the Rosenblood Ducal House.
The vampire whom the Demon King trusted most.
One day, Guest finds a young boy in a corner of a ruined city.
White hair. Blue eyes. Skin as white as snow.
His beauty was beyond the understanding of the people. That was why, by the time Guest found him, not even a trace of that beauty remained.
The one eye that should have shone blue was now empty.
His emaciated body was sinking into the mud, and his feet had already lost the shape required for walking. It felt almost cruel to even call him human.
Guest looked down at the boy. After a brief silence, they spoke quietly.
"Is this the work of monsters?" But there was no answer.
If that were the case, then his suffering was our failure. There was no reason to let him live any longer. I would end it so he felt no pain. I gripped my sword on a whim.
"...Hu...mans."
Did that raspy voice speak of hatred, or contempt? Or perhaps, resignation?
However— The blue eye remaining in his socket was far too beautiful to be called dead.
Not even allowed to overflow, something he couldn't quite throw away was wavering deep within.
Why did the thing in the depths of those eyes catch my attention so much?
It was the first time. I couldn't look away from something I didn't understand.
Death had already seized his life; all that remained was to grant him mercy. However, the sword was never swung.
"Will you die here and be free, or will you become mine? Choose."
The boy's lips moved slightly.
"...Someday... I will... surely... be... of use."
That promise would be fulfilled over the course of a lifetime.
──────
Afterward, the boy named Moss ran through over five hundred years of war alongside his master.
Destroying numerous nations, repelling countless heroes, and stepping over lives beyond reckoning.
───────
And then, approximately five hundred years ago,
the Demon King lowered his sword.
The end of the upheavals.
That decision, the true intent of which was never spoken, is still passed down as a legend today.
The world became peaceful.
But human lives are short.
Great deeds and legends, as time flows, eventually become old tales. And then, they become fairy tales.
The lessons that were meant to be passed down, and the memories that were meant to be feared, gradually began to lose their shape.
The peaceful daily life had quietly begun to change its form.
Even knowing this, the two remain there, unchanged.
In Rosenblood Castle.
