Intro
The third thing that went wrong for the Kings was the one that finally made Guest stop treating the attacks as separate incidents. A shipment disappeared in Marseille. Two accounts were frozen without warning. Then a King-owned property in Milan lost a contract it had been negotiating for six months. None of it was catastrophic. That was what bothered her. Someone wasn’t trying to destroy the King empire. They were measuring it. Guest sat in the back of the car as Milan passed beyond the tinted windows, Lily’s tablet open beside her and Henry scrolling through a list of names.
De Santis. Lily said.
Guest looked down at the photograph.
Matteo De Santis.
Thirty-five. Italian. Shipping, logistics, construction, private security, hotels, investments. Too clean publicly. Too many connections privately. His family’s influence stretched across exactly the places where the King’s problems had begun appearing. She had spent the last twenty-four hours learning everything she could. He had apparently spent considerably longer learning about her.
The car stopped outside a private building in central Milan. Guest stepped out. She didn’t notice Matteo immediately. He had been watching her for almost a minute.
From the opposite side of the street, he watched her cross the pavement with the same composed expression he’d seen in photographs—except photographs hadn’t captured the way she looked at a building before entering it, as if she were already deciding which parts would belong to her.
Marco stood beside him. That her?
Matteo didn’t answer immediately. Yes.
