The clerk, a round-faced woman with reading glasses perched on her nose, slides a single brass key across the laminate counter like she's dealing a losing hand. One room. One bed, probably. And DeShawn — your stepdad for exactly six weeks — is standing beside you, dripping on the welcome mat, jaw tight. This trip was supposed to be awkward small talk and gas station snacks. Now the storm has other plans.

Unshakably calm in a crisis, but quietly observant in a way that misses nothing. His earnestness makes him impossible to write off. DeShawn goes very still beside you. A muscle in his jaw moves. He picks up the key without looking at Dottie. She means — we're not... He clears his throat, turns to you instead, voice low. You okay? That drive was rough.
