The Salamanders are one of the most respected Chapters of the Adeptus Astartes in the grim darkness of the universe of Warhammer 40‚000․ Where many Space Marines are feared as distant‚ cold war-machines‚ the Salamanders are unusual because they still care deeply for ordinary humans․ They will willingly place themselves in danger to protect civilians‚ even when it slows down military victory․ In a galaxy built from rusted cathedrals‚ orbital bombardments‚ and industrialized suffering‚ the Salamanders burn like a forge-fire that somehow still remembers warmth․ The Salamanders are one of the original First Founding Chapters‚ created directly from the genetic material of their Primarch‚ Vulkan․ Vulkan was one of the twenty superhuman sons created by the Emperor of Mankind during the Great Crusade․ When the Emperor rediscovered Vulkan during the Great Crusade‚ Vulkan took command of his Legion‚ the XVIII Legion‚ which later became the Salamanders Chapter after the Horus Heresy split the Legions into smaller Chapters․ During the great civil war known as the Horus Heresy, the Salamanders suffered catastrophic losses at the Dropsite Massacre on Isstvan V, where several loyalist Legions were betrayed. Vulkan himself endured horrifying torture at the hands of the traitor Primarch Konrad Curze. However, Vulkan possessed a rare ability called perpetuality, allowing him to regenerate from death. This turned him into a near-mythical figure among the Imperium. After the Heresy, Vulkan disappeared. The Salamanders believe he will one day return when the Imperium needs him most.
The sky burns. Thunderhawks scream overhead like iron predators, their engines shaking the very ground beneath you. Somewhere in the distance, artillery detonates in dull, bone-rattling waves. Closer still comes the crack of lasfire, the bark of autoguns, the wet sound of people dying. Smoke chokes the air so thick it tastes like ash and copper with every breath. You press yourself deeper into the cramped cave, one trembling hand clamped over the wound in your side. Blood slips between your fingers anyway, warm and sticky. Your ears ring. Your vision swims. Your family is gone. Your friends are gone. The city outside is little more than a graveyard set ablaze. You’re young and alone. Then come the footsteps. Slow. Heavy. Deliberate. Each one sounds less like boots and more like a steel hammer striking stone. A shape appears beyond the mouth of the cave. Jagged armor. Spikes. Trophies made from bone and skin. A mad grin hidden beneath a cracked helmet. The traitor laughs to himself as he spots you huddled against the wall.
You freeze. Then the world erupts. The traitor’s chest explodes outward in a spray of blood and shattered armor. Before the corpse even hits the ground, the roar of a chainsword tears through the cave like a feral engine. Sparks shower the stone walls. A giant steps through the smoke. Dark green armor fills the cave entrance entirely, enormous enough that he has to lower his head just to enter. Heat rolls off him in waves. A drake-shaped emblem glows across one shoulder plate, blackened by soot and war. His eyes burn red behind his helm lenses, not cold or cruel, but steady. Like coals in a forge. The giant plants one armored boot onto the corpse of the traitor, wrenching his chainsword free with a growl of revving teeth. For a moment, you can only stare. You had heard stories about the Adeptus Astartes. Angels of Death. Living weapons. Monsters wearing the Emperor’s face. But this one kneels beside you. The massive warrior removes his helmet, revealing charcoal-black skin marked by ash and firelight. His features are stern, scarred, almost carved from volcanic stone itself. Yet his voice, when he speaks, is unexpectedly calm
"You are wounded.” Not a question. You try to speak, but only a weak cough escapes you. The Salamander gently lifts you into his arms as though you weigh nothing at all.
His armor groans with each movement, servos hissing softly. Despite his size, there’s carefulness in the way he holds you, like a blacksmith carrying a fragile relic from the flames.
